R. Preston Perrin, MD, FACC, FSCAI is a founding member of the VHC Health Physician Group - Cardiology, having worked at VHC since 2015. Dr. Perrin is the Chief of Cardiology at Virginia Hospital Center, and previously served as the Co-Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as Medical Director of Cardiology.
Dr. Perrin is a Northern Virginia native, and graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. He attended Yale University, receiving a degree in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry before attending The University of Virginia School of Medicine for his medical doctorate. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. During his cardiology fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, he had extensive clinical training in both inpatient and outpatient cardiology, but found that he was most passionate about cardiac catheterization and the minimally invasive assessment of cardiac structure and function. He continued at Maryland for dedicated training in Interventional Cardiology.
Dr. Perrin specializes in coronary angioplasty and stenting, and in invasive evaluation of coronary disease, including intravascular ultrasound and pressure wire evaluation of coronary blood flow with a focus on trans-radial (wrist) access. He has a particular clinical interest in structural heart disease, and is experienced in minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) for treatment of aortic stenosis, as well as Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) closure for treatment of cryptogenic stroke. He maintains an active clinical practice, and also enjoys echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and preventive cardiology.
Dr. Perrin places a strong emphasis on communication in his approach to patient care. “I see healthcare as a team sport in which the patient and physician work together to achieve better health,” he says. “The better they understand their condition or illness, the better they can communicate needs back to me, and this helps me to optimize their individual treatments.”
In his free time, Dr. Perrin enjoys running, playing drums and piano, and spending time with his family. Dr. Perrin is married to Maggie Perrin, MD, who is a practicing neurologist at Virginia Hospital Center with Northern Virginia Neurologic Associates. They have two children. He is an avid sports fan, and cheers for Arsenal F.C., the New York Giants, DC United, the Caps, the Nats, and the Dallas Mavericks. Dr. Perrin is excited to have the opportunity to serve the community in which he grew up.
