Gaither Smith, CNM

Gaither Smith is a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) with VHC Health Physicians - Charlotte S. Benjamin Center for Women's Health. 

Gaither graduated cum laude from Kenyon College in 2011, with degrees in psychology and anthropology. Shortly after, she attended Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, where she earned a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialty in nurse-midwifery in 2015.

After graduating, she worked part-time as a labor and delivery nurse in Steamboat Springs, CO and full-time as nurse-midwife at a birth center in Denver, CO. There she honed her clinical skills and experienced firsthand the power of “low tech” and “high touch” techniques to help women achieve the birth experience they desired. In 2018, she and her husband moved to Arlington, VA to be closer to family and for over two years she worked at Capital Women’s Care of Arlington providing full-scope women’s health care and delivering babies alongside her physician colleagues.

Gaither specializes in providing full-scope midwifery care including gynecological care to women at all stages of life—adolescence through menopause. She is passionate about providing women and their families with safe, evidence-based, and personalized care. One of the most rewarding aspects of her job is building relationships with her patients and engaging in shared decision-making to optimize their health. She has a special interest in supporting women in the postpartum period including recovery from pregnancy and birth, navigating breastfeeding complications, and adapting to the challenges (and joys) of motherhood. Gaither is Board Certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) and is a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

Recently, she welcomed her first child Henry, who was born at VHC in January 2021. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son, traveling (especially back to Colorado or to visit her sisters), and staying active—swimming, running, hiking, and gardening.

Gaither joined the VHC Physician Group – OB/GYN Physician Group in September 2021 and is currently accepting new patients.
