Dr. Miguel A. Fernandez, M.D. earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry and English at the University of Miami. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree at University of Miami in Florida in 1990. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Beginning in 1990 his training at Georgetown brought him to Arlington Hospital, the precursor to VHC Health.

From 1994 to 1996 he was the Assistant Medical Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Arlington Hospital assisting in the training of Georgetown Ob/Gyn residents and medical students. IN 1996, he entered a hospital private practice while still being involved in the education of Georgetown residents and medical students. In 2018, he went back to teaching fulltime as a VHC Physicians Group OBGYN Hospitalist and as Co-Director of the VHC OBGYN Outpatient Clinic and Co-Director of OBGYN Education. He currently serves as the Director of OBGYN Education and Director of the OBGYN Outpatient Clinic.

He has served in leadership roles at VHC since 2010. He served as OBGYN Department Chair from 2013-2020. He is currently the Associate OBGYN Residency Program Director and Associate OBGYN Clerkship Director for residents and medical students. He is an Associate Professor of OBGYN at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Faculty at the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics. At VHC he serves as the Chair of the Ethics Committee. He has been awarded several teaching awards including three Golden Apple Awards.

His interests include care for immigrant populations, education, bioethics, hospital safety, and maternal safety protocols.
