Diagnostic Tests

The choice of diagnostic tools depends on the specific condition and the information needed to guide surgical decision-making. A multidisciplinary approach involving radiologists, gastroenterologists and surgeons is often necessary to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning for hepatopancreatobiliary surgeries.

Imaging Studies

Computed Tomography (CT) Scan: CT scans provide detailed cross-sectional images of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts, helping to identify tumors, cysts, abscesses and other abnormalities.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRIs use powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts, aiding in the detection of tumors, inflammation and structural anomalies.

Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to visualize the liver, pancreas and bile ducts. It's commonly used to identify gallstones, tumors, and blockages.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

ERCP combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to visualize the bile ducts and pancreatic duct. It can help diagnose and treat conditions like gallstones, strictures and tumors.

Liver Biopsy

A small sample of liver tissue is taken for analysis. It helps diagnose liver diseases and assess the severity of liver damage.

Pancreatic Biopsy

If a pancreatic tumor is suspected, a biopsy may be performed to determine if it's benign or malignant.

Blood Tests

Liver Function Tests: These tests measure levels of enzymes and proteins that indicate how well the liver is functioning.
Tumor Markers: Certain blood markers can be elevated in the presence of certain hepatopancreatobiliary conditions.

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)

EUS combines endoscopy and ultrasound to produce detailed images of the pancreas and surrounding structures. It's useful for assessing pancreatic tumors and obtaining biopsies.

Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid (HIDA) Scan

EUS combines endoscopy and ultrasound to produce detailed images of the pancreas and surrounding structures. It's useful for assessing pancreatic tumors and obtaining biopsies.

Laparoscopy

Minimally invasive surgery is used to directly visualize the liver, pancreas and surrounding structures. It's particularly helpful when imaging studies are inconclusive.

Hepatic Angiography

This imaging technique uses contrast dye and X-rays to visualize blood vessels in the liver. It's useful for assessing blood supply to tumors and planning surgical approaches.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan

PET scans can help determine the extent of cancer spread and metastasis, aiding in treatment planning.

Causes of HPB Disease

The causes of hepatobiliary disease can be complex and multifactorial. Factors like genetics, lifestyle choices, environmental factors and underlying health conditions can all play a role in the development of these diseases. If you suspect you have a HPB condition, it's crucial to seek medical evaluation and guidance for proper diagnosis and treatment.
