Complex Gynecological Surgical Procedures
Your OB/GYN will explore and discuss conservative treatments first, but depending on your condition and individualized treatment plan, a hysterectomy may be the best option for care. This surgical technique involves surgically removing the uterus either through minimally invasive techniques or through a larger abdominal incision. Sometimes the cervix will be removed as well, depending on the condition. Your provider will discuss which surgical options will work best for your treatment plan.
Different Types of Hysterectomies:
- Abdominal hysterectomy (open, traditional approach) – Removes the uterus and cervix through an abdominal incision 4 to 6 inches long while you’re under general anesthesia (makes you sleep) or regional anesthesia (numbs your lower body). This approach requires a hospital stay of three to six days and a recovery period of up to six weeks. Your doctor may recommend this approach if you have:
- Large fibroids that do not respond to drug therapy or would be difficult to remove vaginally or laparoscopically
- Severe endometriosis
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Vaginal hysterectomy – Removes the uterus and cervix through an incision deep in the vagina under general or regional anesthesia to treat uterine-vaginal prolapse and early cervical or uterine cancer. Vaginal hysterectomy is a minimally invasive technique offering less visible scarring, a shorter hospital stay of one to three days and less recovery time (four weeks) than an abdominal hysterectomy.
- Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (minimally invasive) – Removes the uterus and cervix using small abdominal and vaginal incisions, a laparoscope (a thin, lighted telescope) and a tiny camera. Your hospital stay and recovery time are like a vaginal hysterectomy.
- Laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy (robotic-assisted) – Removes the uterus by inserting a laparoscope and small surgical instruments through tiny navel and abdomen incisions. Your surgeon separates the uterus from the cervix and removes it through one incision.
What is an Annual Gynecological Exam?
Maintain good reproductive and sexual health with yearly exams. These exams can detect health problems early while also identifying risk factors for problems that could develop in the future. Your annual exam may include:
- Detailed medical history discussion to help identify risk factors
- Detailed medical history discussion to help identify risk factors
- General physical exam
- Breast and pelvic exams to check for abnormalities
- STD screenings
- Vaccinations for common diseases such as hepatitis and human papillomavirus (HPV)
Pap Test
A Pap test, or Pap smear, screens for precancerous cells in the cervix. The test takes a sample of cells from the opening of the cervix, usually during a routine pelvic exam. The cells are analyzed for abnormalities. We recommend all women over 21 have routine Pap smears every three to five years, depending on age and risk factors.
Abnormal Pap Test
If you have an abnormal Pap test, your doctor may recommend:
- Colposcopy – Examines the cervix with a special magnifying light and takes a small sample of the tissue to evaluate for cancer cells
- LEEP (loop electrosurgical excisional procedure) – Uses a small wire to remove abnormal cells from the cervix

Female Sterilization
Female sterilization is one of the most effective forms of birth control. It’s over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. If you and your doctor decide it’s your best option, you’ll have a minimally invasive (laparoscopic) procedure at VHC Health.
During the procedure, your doctor may burn or remove a portion of the fallopian tubes or take the entire tubes out. This method helps decrease the risk of ovarian cancer.
Your doctor can perform the sterilization procedure right after a C-section delivery or as a separate outpatient procedure. If you have a separate procedure, you will go home the same day as your surgery. You can usually resume regular activities in less than two weeks.
