Mary L. Sebastian, MD, FACS is a breast surgeon with VHC Health Physicians - Charlotte S. Benjamin Center for Women's Health.
Dr. Sebastian is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She also received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. During her studies at UVA she was awarded a National Science Foundation research grant. She completed her surgical residency at the Medical College of Virginia where she was Administrative Chief Resident in her final year. During her residency she received a prestigious National Institutes of Health Research Fellowship.
Prior to joining the Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health at VHC Health as a dedicated breast surgeon, Dr. Sebastian completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgical techniques at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Certified by the American Board of Surgery and a member of the Association of Women Surgeons, Dr. Sebastian is committed to the multidisciplinary coordination of breast health care and customizing treatment plans to the unique requirements of each patient. She, and her colleagues, strongly believe that no breast cancer journey should be done alone and they are there to provide the treatment and support individuals and families need.
Dr. Sebastian serves as VHC Health's physician liaison to the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. She is also a member of the Education Committee of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.
Dr. Sebastian has been named Chairman of the Genetics Working Group of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. The Working Group advocates on behalf of patients for insurance companies to cover genetic testing. “One of the first initiatives of the Working Group, done in cooperation with the American Society for Clinical Oncology, was to survey physicians nationwide to assess how they incorporate genetic testing into their practice, and how they keep up to date. Based on survey results, we will design courses to help breast cancer specialists stay current with this rapidly changing area of cancer care.”
