Dr. Omer Shahab is a board-certified physician trained in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.
Dr. Shahab obtained dual bachelor’s degrees in Cognitive Science and Psychology from the University of Virginia and received his medical degree from the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University in Miami, FL. He completed training in Internal Medicine at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA, followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition at Virginia Commonwealth University Health (formerly the Medical College of Virginia) in Richmond, VA.
Dr. Shahab has published peer-reviewed journal articles in the areas of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, machine learning and omics in inflammatory bowel disease, gastric intestinal metaplasia, and hepatitis C. He has also given oral presentations at national and international medical conferences, including Digestive Disease Week and The Liver Meeting. He also has experience in digital health, virtual care, digital therapeutics, and artificial intelligence in gastroenterology. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology Innovation and Technology Committee.
Dr. Shahab’s areas of expertise include general gastroenterology, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, gut-brain axis, and endoscopy. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending his free time with family, as well as playing and watching basketball.
