What Does a General Surgeon Do?

A general surgeon at VHC Health has specialized knowledge and experience in caring for you before, during and after surgery. Your surgeon can diagnose, manage and provide essential surgical care that may reduce pain, foster healing and improve quality of life.

Conditions We Treat

Choose a general surgeon at VHC Health Physicians Surgical Specialists to treat a broad range of conditions affecting different parts of your body, such as:

  • Abdominal organs, including the liver, spleen, gallbladder and pancreas
  • Breast, skin and soft tissue
  • Digestive tract, such as the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach and small and large intestines
  • Endocrine glands, including the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenals

Deciding on Surgery

Your doctor will carefully evaluate your condition, its seriousness and the potential risks and benefits of surgery. You’ll also talk about any personal health factors to consider to ensure surgery is safe for you, meets your needs and will give you the best outcome.

Depending on your diagnosis, surgery may be the best treatment for your condition. You and your surgeon may decide a surgical procedure is the right next step when other treatments do not work. Learn more about the following treatments:

Minimally Invasive Treatment Benefits

Rely on VHC Health for access to today’s most advanced surgical methods. That means you’ll have options for minimally invasive techniques for tests and procedures. These methods use small incisions instead of larger ones needed for traditional open surgery.

You’ll benefit from minimally invasive surgery because it can result in:

  • Faster recovery
  • Fewer complications
  • Less pain after surgery
  • Less scaring
  • Quicker return to normal activities/li>
  • Smaller incisions

Minimally Invasive Surgeries & Procedures

Minimally invasive procedures and robotic surgery provide precision surgery assistance and allow your surgeon to see areas inside the body that are not always visible otherwise. Sometimes diagnostic procedures may find a problem that can be treated at the same time using minimally invasive procedures.

Depending on the type of test or procedure you have, your general surgeon may use one of these minimally invasive techniques:

  • Laparoscopy - Looks inside the abdomen using small incisions and a laparoscope (a thin, lit tube) to check organs or take tissue samples to test for signs of disease. Your surgeon may insert other medical instruments through the incisions to remove organs.
  • Endoscopy - Examines the digestive tract using thin, flexible tubes with tiny cameras and tools at the end (endoscopes) to assess conditions affecting your esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine or rectum.
  • Bronchoscopy - Checks the lung airways using a flexible tube (bronchoscope) to help evaluate and diagnose lung problems, assess blockages, take tissue or fluid samples and remove a foreign body.
  • Sigmoidoscopy - Assesses the lower part of the large intestine using a short, flexible, lit tube (sigmoidoscope) for causes of bleeding, abdominal pain and diarrhea and detect and remove polyps or tissue samples.
