Speech-Language Pathology:
Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)

A Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing uses a small camera to assess swallowing. The endoscope is inserted through the nose allowing the speech-language pathologist to view the swallowing structures. The patient is then required to swallow liquids and foods of various consistencies while the speech-language pathologist watches the structures on a video screen. The test provides information on the overall swallowing process, both motor and sensory aspects, as well as a patients risk for swallowing fluids or foods into the lungs, which is known as aspiration.

The speech pathologist of the Outpatient Rehabilitation Department at VHC Health have additional training in Performing FEES Testing.
