Labor Support Volunteer Program
At VHC Health, we know having a baby isn't just a medical experience - it's a momentous, life-changing event. And one that requires the right circle of support, care and guidance.
Alongside VHC Health’s OB Journey which provides education, birth navigation, support groups and classes, our doula-trained Labor Support Volunteers (LSVs) can give additional guidance and care on the day of your baby’s birth*. These passionate and compassionate community members will offer encouragement, support, companionship and attention throughout your labor and birth experience.
Assembling your birth team is a personal decision. When you give birth at VHC Health, you are welcome to bring your own professional doula to support your experience. You may also benefit from the aid of one of our LSVs who are available to guide people in labor, free of charge.
*We are actively recruiting volunteers, but at this time we are not able to guarantee that a volunteer will be available when you deliver your baby.
Become a Labor Support Volunteer
Make a difference by donating your time and loving expertise to VHC Health's LSV program. Whether you are an experienced doula looking to donate your time loving expertise, or a community member hoping to grow, learn from birth professionals, and support maternal well-being in your neighborhood, we welcome you to apply. Our LSVs provide compassionate, knowledgeable in-person support to patients throughout their birth experience.
Research shows that on average people who receive additional social support during labor tend to have better pain control, improved birth outcomes and less need for medical intervention.
The LSV program hopes to enhance the experience and outcomes of pregnant people in our community, with a special emphasis on underserved populations.
As an LSV, you will:
- Receive training led by professional, experienced doulas on how to provide skillful, compassionate support to laboring people.
- Work alongside passionate nurses, physicians and other health care providers in a mission-driven organization.
- Play a significant role in supporting maternal health and well-being in our community.
- Join a supportive community of fellow volunteers.
