Physical Therapy for Lymphedema

When you need help managing lymphedema—swelling caused by a blockage in your lymphatic system—turn to the experienced physical therapists at Virginia Hospital Center.

Trained in Lymphedema Care

Feel confident that our physical therapists are qualified to treat all types of lymphedema because they are:

  • Lymphology Association of North America/LANA-certified or LANA-eligible
  • Recognized by the National Lymphedema Network

Complete Decongestive Therapy

Your therapist will design a customized Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) program for you that may include:

  • Compression garments
  • Education in prophylactic methods
  • Exercises
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Specialized compression bandages
  • Skin care and ongoing self-care

Goals of Lymphedema Therapy

Follow your care plan to:

  • Decrease swelling
  • Reduce fibrotic tissue
  • Avoid the reaccumulation of lymph fluid
  • Prevent and eliminate infections
  • Maintain normal or near-normal size of the limb(s)
