Urology Treatments & Surgeries
When a urologic condition like urinary tract infection (UTI), kidney stone or bladder control problem makes your life uncomfortable, look to the urology specialists at VHC Health for treatments to help you feel better.
Urologic Cancer Care
Turn to us for exceptional diagnosis and treatment for genitourinary cancers that affect men's reproductive organs and men and women’s urinary tracts. The majority of our surgeries use the latest technology including the DaVinci Xi Robot to perform minimally invasive surgeries. Occasionally, some patients require traditional open surgical procedures.
We treat all genitourinary cancers including:
- Prostate Cancer
- Kidney (Renal Cancer)
- Bladder Cancer
- Testicular Cancer
- Penile Cancer
- Urethral Cancer
Cystoscopy
Your urologist can perform a cystoscopy in their office to diagnose or treat bladder problems such as blood in the urine or urination issues. Cystoscopy uses a rigid or flexible cystoscope (a small tube with a fiber optic camera inside) to inspect your bladder and urethra visually to see if there is a problem.
Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH)
Men with an enlarged prostate, known as BPH, have many treatment options, including medications, office-based, same day treatments, and minimally invasive procedures and surgeries.
Transurethal Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgery to treat urinary problems from an enlarged prostate (BPH). This effective operation uses a scope inserted into the penis and urethra to remove excess prostate tissue blocking urine flow.
Aquablation
Aquablation is a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. This safe, effective treatment doesn’t require an incision and is heat free. Robotically controlled high-pressure water jets remove excess prostate tissue and give you long-lasting relief from BPH symptoms.
Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Simple Prostatectomy
If you are diagnosed with a large or very large prostate gland you may need surgery to remove it. Using the DaVinci Robot, our urologists perform a surgery called robotic assisted laparoscopic simple/suprapubic prostatectomy. Compared to traditional surgery, you’ll benefit from less blood loss, smaller incisions and a quicker recovery time.
Urolift® System
The Urolift System is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that takes 10 to 15 minutes. Your doctor places tiny implants to hold open the blocked pathways in the prostate that are preventing urine flow. This procedure provides quick and long-term relief from BPH, and you go home the same day.
Kidney Stones
Seek care from a doctor to determine the best treatment option for your kidney stones. Small kidney stones usually pass without treatment. Larger kidney stones that cause problems may need treatment.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)
ESWL is a common, non-invasive way to treat stones in the kidney or ureter (the tube draining urine from the kidney to the bladder). It is an outpatient procedure that uses an energy source to generate and direct a shock wave at the stone. X-rays help aim the shockwaves at the stone, and the repeated force caused by the shock waves fragments the stone into small pieces.
After the procedure, the stone fragments will pass naturally in your urine in as little as a few days to several weeks. The procedure takes about 45 minutes. The success of ESWL depends on the size, location and composition of the stone. Certain types of stones are more resistant to ESWL because of their density and may require another treatment.
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
If you have large or irregularly shaped kidney stones or stones resistant to other treatments, you may need percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). PCNL is a minimally invasive procedure that uses ultrasound and a probe or laser to break up stones and remove them. This technique has a high success rate for clearing stones.
Ureteroscopy
Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery for removing stones. It uses a small telescope passed through the urethra and into the ureter to remove a stone. Often stones require fragmentation with a laser, which allows your surgeon to remove the smaller fragments with a grasping device.
Urinary Incontinence
After your doctor determines the cause of your urine leakage, you’ll work together to decide which treatment option is best for your urinary incontinence. While most men are continent and do not leak after being treated for prostate cancer, some individuals may require subsequent surgeries.
Artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) insertion
Surgery to place an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) is an option for men with stress urinary incontinence or urine leakage associated with coughing, sneezing, or straining. The AUS keeps urine from leaking and improves your quality of life.
A cuff fits around the urethra with a pump in the scrotum. Squeezing the pump moves fluid from the cuff to a balloon reservoir behind the abdominal muscles. Depressing a button hidden in the scrotum releases the cuff and empties the bladder. Once urination is complete, the cuff automatically closes, keeping the urine in the bladder.
Sling Procedure
This outpatient procedure implants a mesh sling to elevate and support the sphincter muscle and restore bladder control.
