Arlington, VA: June 9, 2020 – Virginia Hospital Center (VHC), a community-based hospital providing medical services to the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 75 years, has named Anthony “Tony” Burchard as President of Virginia Hospital Center Health System Foundation. Burchard has over thirty years of experience advising and leading non-profit organizations.

“I am excited to be joining Virginia Hospital Center, as it is an incredibly mission-oriented organization that is exemplified in everything they do,” said Burchard. “I look forward to working with the Health System Foundation team to build-on current partnerships and establish new ones, all while advancing medical excellence in the community.”

Tony Burchard joins Virginia Hospital Center with over 30 years of experience advising and leading non-profit organizations. Most recently, he served as an advisor to non-profits, wealth managers, family offices and start-up companies in the healthcare and humanitarian industries. His experience includes coaching development officers to create sustainable philanthropic models and gift officers to integrate metrics for better results.

“VHC is thrilled to have Tony joining our team,” said James Cole, President & CEO of Virginia Hospital Center. “We believe that his experience is incredibly pertinent to our mission and know that he will be capable of curating additional community partnerships and achieving great things in this role. Tony’s extensive background working with non-profit organizations and leading major fundraising campaigns will allow VHC to utilize innovative and creative strategies to have an even larger impact on the community.”

As President of the Virginia Hospital Center Health System Foundation, Burchard is responsible for overseeing this philanthropic and fundraising branch of the hospital. This sector focuses its efforts on building relationships and partnerships across Northern Virginia and the Washington, DC, metropolitan area in order to advance medical excellence through philanthropy.

“Dedicated, proven leadership is essential to fulfilling our organizational mission of growing philanthropic support of the Hospital,” said David Townshend, Chairman of the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation Board and member of the Virginia Hospital Center Board. “Bringing in Tony, an experienced and confident leader, will accelerate that growth and further support our mission. We all look forward to working with him in service of our community.”

Prior to his time as an advisor, Burchard served seven years as President of Inova Health Foundation, a charitable platform for the health system that serves over two million patients and is located across Norther Virginia. In this role, Tony completed a ten-year stakeholder engagement plan three years ahead of schedule. The outcomes of this campaign far exceeded the goals: recruiting community volunteers, physicians, nurses and allied health professionals united behind the objective of transforming the organizational culture to one of gratitude for the patients and communities served. One of the material benefits was that over $250 million was raised in philanthropy and grants from patient families, corporate, state and local funding sources.

Buchard’s background also includes Senior Vice President of Development and Communications for Project HOPE, an international health and humanitarian non-government organization, and Vice President of Ketchum, Inc., a communications and public relations firm.

Burchard holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Ohio University in Athens, OH.
