VHC Health Announces Three New Appointments to Executive Leadership Team


Arlington, VA (March 29, 2023) – 
VHC Health, a community-based health system providing medical services to the Washington, DC metropolitan area, has named three new members to its executive leadership team: Sharon Brickhouse Martin, PMP, Vice President, Health Services Integration; Sam Gilkeson, Vice President, Human Resources; and Darryl Ernst, MHA, Senior Vice President of VHC Health Physicians Group. Brickhouse Martin and Ernst started with VHC Health this week while Gilkeson began in January.

Sharon Brickhouse Martin, PMP, is transitioning roles at VHC Health to Vice President, Health Services Integration as of March 6, 2023. Previously, she served on the VHC Health Board of Directors and has a deep knowledge of the health system’s needs and priorities. Prior to her time at VHC Health, Brickhouse Martin was the founder and president of BRICKHOUSE-MARTIN Healthcare Engineering (B-MHE), a professional services firm whose mission is to work with industry clients to sustain operational improvements and manage change using proven engineering analyses. Her responsibilities as vice president include leading and coordinating strategic initiatives across the health system, as well as ensuring successful project completion and integration within the various VHC Health departments.

Sam Gilkeson transitioned roles at VHC Health as the new Vice President of Human Resources, Chief Human Resources Officer, beginning on January 1, 2023. Previously, he served as the Human Resources Director as well as manager of the HR and Benefits teams at VHC Health. As a licensed attorney and healthcare compliance professional, Gilkeson has extensive experience in employment-related matters, HR policies, change management and strategic planning.

Darryl Ernst, MHA is joining the system as the Senior Vice President of VHC Health Physician Services as of March 6, 2023. In this role, Ernst will lead the physician enterprise’s strategic growth, operational excellence, transformation and alignment of the physician group. With more than 15 years of experience in leading physician group practices, Ernst will leverage his significant industry expertise to help guide the VHC Health Physicians’ strategic plan for regional growth. Ernst’s previous roles include president of General Physician, PC, where he managed over 330 providers in more than 60 locations, as well as chief operating officer of the Dent Neurologic Institute, the largest outpatient neurology practice and neuro-diagnostic center in the United States.
