A Proud 80 Year Tradition
The Auxiliary has always been an integral part of the Hospital. Bertha Kelly, the prime organizer of the Auxiliary, was also the first Vice President of the Arlington Hospital Association, incorporated in 1934 for the purpose of building a Hospital for the County. Auxiliary fundraising enabled the Hospital to buy the land on which the current Hospital stands; and through the years monies (more than $1 million) raised by the Auxiliary have helped the Hospital continually improve both medical care and patient comfort.
Most importantly, Auxiliary members have given millions of hours in service to the Hospital community. Early volunteer efforts included sewing the Hospital’s linens, furnishing the nurses quarters, and staffing a patient library.
As the Hospital has grown, the tasks have changed. What hasn't changed is the basic mission of all Auxiliary members: provision of caring and knowledgeable service for patients and staff of, and visitors to VHC Health.
Still Playing a Vital Role
VHC Health Auxiliary members serve in many capacities:
- Staffing Information Desks
- Providing wheelchair escort service
- Operating two Gift Shops
- Giving support service in a number of areas of Hospital operations: Intensive Care, Outpatient Surgery, Outpatient Clinic, GI Unit, Pre-operative Screening and Post-anesthesia Care.
